WREG: Three candidates vying for Rep. Fincher’s congressional seat

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Representative Stephen Fincher announced he would not be seeking re-election for a fourth term.

“I have decided not to seek re-election to the 8th Congressional District seat this year,” Fincher said in the statement. “I am humbled by the opportunity to serve the people of West Tennessee, but I never intended to become a career politician. The last six years have been the opportunity of a lifetime, and I am honored to have been given the chance to serve. I will be returning to Frog Jump and my family and business, but intend to stay involved to the extent I can. I want to thank every citizen of the 8th District for the privilege of serving.”

He did not give a specific reason for wanting to step down, reported The Tennessean.

According to his website, the 42-year-old has represented the 8th District since 2010.

Since the announcement, several leaders have come forward saying they would be interested in taking the lawmaker’s seat in Congress including Former U.S. Attorney David Kustoff, Doctor George Flinn, current state Senator Brian Kelsey of Germantown, Shelby County Commissioner Steve Basar, Shelby County Register of Deeds Tom Leatherwood and state Rep. Steve McManus.
